Barack Obama can and will restore America to what it once was

By nathan sheets

Change has become the popular adage to Sen. Barack Obama's campaign to become president.

But the change Senator Obama plans is more of rejuvenation, and I wouldn't be voting for the Democratic presidential candidate if it wasn't.

Despite my distaste for partisan politics, the bad taste they leave in my mouth when discussing them and the fact I swore I would not vote for any candidate on either side -- I didn't plan on the emergence of Obama.

Soon into his campaign, Obama began taking sides on issues I was most concerned with: an end to the war in Iraq, health-care reform and the issue closest to me -- making college more affordable.

I realized more and more that Obama, despite the vanity surrounding him, was a legit candidate and best suited to become the next president of the United States.

Walking across campus, I polled 30 people. Twenty-five were for Obama and five for Sen. John McCain.

This poll, though small, reflects national estimates that young adults overwhelmingly support Obama. With 20 percent of the electorate under age 25, this could be the year young voters make a difference. According to the Chicago Tribune, 47 percent of those under 25 voted in 2004. And researchers are expecting even more than the 11-percent surge of 2004 this election.

The issues including the failing economy, the war in Iraq and health care have sparked concern and disgust among college-age adults, who have come of voting age during the failed policies of the past eight years.

Young people have noticed Obama has addressed these issues and come up with legitimate plans.

I am not naïve, and believing our problems can turn around overnight is wrong. But, electing Obama can be the best start to fixing the mess.

Electing an Obama-Biden ticket will begin an elimination of the anti-intellectualism this county has come to embrace, which has left the public education system of United States at the bottom of the industrialized world. This ideal has held the United States back and has spawned preconceptions that American's are lazy and stupid.

Obama's ideas come with a gleam of hope rather than with a doctrine of fear. Uniting the self-proclaimed "United" States is Obama's plan and not unattainable.

Obama said in a rally in Dayton, Ohio: "Together, we cannot fail. Not now. Not when we have a crisis to solve and an economy to save. Not when there are so many Americans without jobs and without homes. Not when there are families who can't afford to see a doctor, or send their child to college or pay their bills at the end of the month."

Further change can happen through endorsements of public service, not only in the military but in the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations. Obama has planned to give $4,000 per year for college in exchange for 100 hours of public service.

He plans to make health care more affordable by cutting costs $2,500 for average families by reforming the insurance market and eliminating non-competitive activities that drive prices up.

By finally following through with clean fuel technology and reducing dependence on foreign oil, Obama plans on creating more jobs in the process, while beginning the solution to our energy problems.

Like most American's, Obama has noticed the trickle down theory of economics does not work. It will not work now as CEO benefits reach nearly $100 million per year in some cases. Raising taxes a mere four percent will not hurt people who make more than $250,000 per year. It will only help to restore a United States once though to be the beacon of hope to the world, a country created to benefit the masses including people from all backgrounds. Obama understands what the U.S. was and offers the best plan to restore its prominence.

Wouldn't you think a government and economy "for the people and by the people" would hold direct concerns for the people?

Obama has said yes through his policies and has expressed an understanding of what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they formed the foundation of this country.

Obama offers a breath of fresh air and a view of the way the United States can be run again. That is why I'm voting, and more specifically, that is why I'm voting for Barack Obama to become the next president of the United States.
